To Whom This May Concern,

Earlier this week I was reading an issue of The Advocate featuring the designer turned movie director Tom Ford. Upon reading this article, I couldn’t help but get past his views of his identity.

“I don’t think of myself as gay. That doesn’t mean that I’m not gay. I just don’t define myself by my sexuality.” -Ford

Ford is currently promoting his first film, A Single Man. The film is an adaptation of a novel by Christopher Isherwood. The film is about a man named George. He is in his mid fifties and decides to move on, past mourning, after losing his lover Jim.

“If you said name 10 things that define me, being gay wouldn’t make the list. I think Isherwood was like that too. There are many gay characters in his works because his work is so autobiographical, but their gayness isn’t the focus.” - Ford

First, I would like to say that I am not ignoring any part about me. Yes, I have dated women. Yes, I have dated men. Yes, my preference as of now is men. However, my sexuality does not define me. If someone would ask me, like Ford, to list 10 things that define me, gay/straight/bisexual would not land on the list. There are so many other facets of me that I would want people to know about me aside from my sexuality.

So yes, lets put this as my way of coming out to my audience. Yes, I am gay. However, do not let that stand at the forefront from the other traits and hats I have. I am also an adventurer, a traveler, a writer, a pessimist, an artist, a dreamer, an animal, a friend, a brother, and a lover.

And so, despite my consistent insecurities, some of which you are all probably familiar with, I honestly do love every part of me. I love my identity and the person I am now today. I have slowly learned to accept every part of my persona. Sure things like my freedom, emotions, and sexuality were things I didn’t know how to coup with at first, but as of now, I have learned to love and accept them.
